For the second half of this two-part series, I specifically wanted to talk to the interior designers out there.

This doesn’t mean that homeowners won’t learn anything from what I am discussing in this episode, so please stay with me.

I promise you won’t be disappointed.

To summarize this story, after working on home renovation projects for over ten years, Andy and Candis Meredith, a design couple from Utah, decided to start working with clients and was given a show on the Magnolia Network called Home Work. A few of their clients were extremely unhappy with this couple’s work and wanted to bring their stories to light.

What the Merediths didn’t realize is that working on your own renovation project is totally different than working with clients. When working with clients, you are managing THEIR expectations, THEIR selections, and THEIR budgets, not yours.

You need to take all of these things very seriously because it’s not your money to spend, it’s theirs.

After being in this industry for over 29 years, I know without a doubt that there is just no way these shows are pulling off what they claim to be pulling off in the timeframes they say and with the budgets that they give. It just doesn’t add up.

As an interior designer, it’s your job to manage, maintain, and stay within the budget set for the project.

Projects can and do go over budget on occasion and for good reason, but they should NOT go over by mistake.

Designers, please hear me when I say that these shows are for entertainment only but they do impact our industry. I want people out there to stop slamming our entire industry when talking about stories like these.

As designers, we can fix this!
