Add-on’s, renovations, and new construction homes can seem intimidating to take on. How do you even get started? How do you find and manage contractors? What surprises should you anticipate coming up? How long do these things take?
In this podcast, you will learn all that and so much more!
What you will learn from this episode:
What I learned in College
What it’s like to be the only girl on the Jobsite
Why I love this work
Why I started this Podcast
In this episode, I wanted to talk to you about how I got started being an Interior Designer.
I was fortunate enough to go to the New York School of Interior Design. Afterward, I started working with a firm that focused on a blend of interior construction and decorating. I spent the early years of my career just tromping through construction sights listening and learning. And, what I learned was that I loved it. I naturally gravitate to how things work, and how they are put together. So this just worked for me. So I purposely stayed with firms that did this kind of work, a blend of interior construction, and decorating.
And, I asked these guys a lot of questions, and not in a demeaning way, but asking about what they were doing and why. I actually ended up learning more from them than any of my professors or other women I worked with.
I was starting to get asked questions from women in my life about their home projects, and the problems they were having. I would give any advice I could, but in the back of my mind thinking, “Oh my gosh, this is avoidable, or most of it could have been avoidable, if only they had known ______.” These women might have done some painting or had new countertops put in, but when you get into gutting out a room, adding on, and taking things down to the plywood, a lot can go wrong, surprises come up. So my goal with my podcast, workbooks, and courses, is to help you learn from all of my years of being that girl on the Jobsite.
Things can still go wrong, surprises still come up, but my goal is to help you pivot, switch focus, find a solution, change paths, and move on.
So that’s a little bit about me!
