Stop Forcing It: Why Flexibility is the Key to Success

FEATURED ON THIS EPISODE:

INTERIOR DESIGNER’S GUIDE TO CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

HOW TO IDENTIFY WHAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK

WHY WE NEED TO SHIFT OUT MINDSET TO ADAPTABILITY

HOW TO BE FLEXIBLE WHILE STILL HOLDING YOUR BOUNDARIES

Today, I want to dispel the myth that there is only one right way, one successful way of running your projects and your business when that just isn’t the case.

This can be a great thing because it gives you the flexibility to implement changes or systems or processes that work for you and not necessarily for the next designer.

This abundant amount of content out there that we have to support us is insanely awesome, however, there is SO much information that we think everything we see is THE way. And yes, those ways could have worked for that particular designer at that time and whatever they were doing was working for them. But that does not mean it will all apply to you, what you’re doing and you’re set of circumstances at this very moment.

This is why I see and hear so much frustration, and why they feel blocked or held back. They’re stuck. And all they want to do is grow.

We all fall into this thinking of, if only I had the perfect contractor, client, and marketing strategy, then my business would run smoothly and I’d never have any issues again. Doesn’t that sound amazing? Almost too hard to believe….because it is.

The reality is no two jobs are alike. No two clients are alike. No two contractors are alike. But that is the one predictability of our industry and honestly why I still do what I do, 30 years later. If everything was the same, I can guarantee you I’d be bored out of my mind and on to a different industry.

So instead of trying to force that one size fits all to every single project, client, and contractor, we need to shift our mindset to adaptability.

But absolutely without compromising your profitability and your boundaries. And that’s where we’ve been going wrong.

Because when we become adaptable or flexible or open-minded or any word you want to use, we tend to tear down our boundaries, and we tend to lower our profitability. And those things can’t happen if you are going to build a profitable and successful business.

So you may be wondering what the hell I mean when I say you should ‘not be flexible while still holding our boundaries.’

I just did this in my own business and I am happy to share in today’s episode exactly what I did, why I did it, and what I expect and anticipate to get from it.

I’m hoping that after hearing today’s episode you understand that it is a myth that there is just one way to run your business. And better yet one way to ALWAYS run projects. Because if you are stuck thinking that every project has to run the same way, you will find yourself in deep trouble because it just doesn’t happen.

Now there are a lot of commonalities between projects, but no two projects will ever be the same experience. You’re going to see processes, strategies, and systems that work beautifully for other designers but please know that it doesn’t mean that they will all work for you and that’s ok.

Take what fits.

Implement the hell out of it.

Leave what doesn’t fit, for now.

And please, trust yourself to know the difference and that you are allowed to structure your business that supports your success right now.
