  • How to market based on your ideal client

We are staring down the upcoming crazy times of holidays and vacations! Now is the time when we really need to stop before that hype kicks in and focus on goals for 2023.

Maybe you’re like me, and goal setting has never been a formal process for you. Of course, I had goals, and want business, maybe I want more business. Maybe I want more decorating work. Maybe I want more renovation projects. I’m happy to admit that that was a fault of mine to not really sit down, put pen to paper and focus on what I wanted the new year to look like for my business.

I want you to learn from my mistakes. You need to be planning what you want to be working on for 2023.

Of course, you’re going to have projects that are going to go into 2023, but I am talking about your NEW focus, your renewed energy, and where you want to direct it.

I want to take you back to the pandemic days when I was focusing a lot on webinars. The term ICA kept coming up, and I was wondering, “What on earth is an ICA?”

An ICA is Ideal Client Avatar. And when I asked the question about it in the design group, I found out how they truly take the time to understand who their ideal client avatar is. I also found out I was thinking of my ideal job, not my ideal client. That was a light bulb moment for me, and I want you all to understand the difference as well.

I was challenged to sit down and write down everything I knew about who my ideal client avatar was. And I encourage you to do this as well – remember, no detail is too small!

Even if you don’t have many clients to distill down who they are, this is your opportunity to build your ideal client.

You don’t have to have decades of experience in order to come up with your ideal client. It’s just a different exercise depending on where you are in your career.

By understanding your client’s unique characteristics, you will understand their pain points and possibly what they’ve tried in the past to solve and how you can actually solve those pain points, both past and present. And that’s your goal.

As designers, we tend to narrow our focus on how to market ourselves and our services, and it can be broadened once you establish who your ideal client is and that can become more clear for you as you start to write down what the unique components and characteristics of your ideal client.

Doing this also helps clarify your goals and direct your initiatives in marketing, which helps bring in the clients and the projects that you are hoping for in 2023!
