Add-on’s, renovations, and new construction homes can seem intimidating to take on. How do you even get started? How do you find and manage contractors? What surprises should you anticipate coming up? How long do these things take?

In this podcast, you will learn all that and so much more!

3 Ways to Use Photographs on Renovation Projects

What you will learn in this episode:

  • The types of photographs designers take on projects, and if they aren’t, they should be taking on projects

  • Why homeowners should care about this

  • Why designers really need to put an emphasis on this aspect of our business

Today I want to discuss with you three different types of photography that I implement on every one of my projects and why it’s important to do this from the very beginning, as well as for homeowners to understand why it’s important for a designer to be using this tool. (I think it may come as a bit of a surprise because it really does impact the quality of the project that you will receive in the end!)

So the three different types of photography I utilize on a project are:

First, what would be called a Scouting or a Memory book – photographs that will tell you the story just in case you’ve forgotten any detail along the way.

Having these photos makes it so convenient to look back through and say, “Oh, that door looks about 6 inches from the window.” So you’re not having to constantly go back to the drawings unless, of course, you need exact measurements.

The second is the new phenomenon of social media.

Whether we love it or hate it, it is a reality and part of a designer’s life. The photos are a really important way of conveying the progress and displaying how a project moves from stage 1, to 2, to 3, which I find really informative and valuable for people to see!

This also really reinforces the wow factor and why the client took on this project in the first place.

The third type of photography is the traditional portfolio work.

This is a very large component that I often see designers skip over for a variety of reasons which I share more about in today’s episode.

I hope this helps explain to homeowners why photography is so important and why you might see your designer constantly taking pictures of your project. But also for designers, the importance of you doing it and how best to use those photographs throughout the design process on each project!
