Pricing Projects, Building Confidence, and More with Rebecca Hay

What you will learn in this episode:

  • How structuring your pricing can help your success

  • Building confidence in your interior design business

  • Why we need a community and mentors

I am so excited for you to hear this conversation with fellow designer Rebecca Hay, CEO of Rebecca Hay Designs, host of the Resilient by Design podcast, international speaker and business coach. She’s the creator of the revolutionary online course, Power of Process, helping time-strapped and frustrated Interior Designers eliminate the chaos of running a business so they can achieve focus and clarity. She helps designers build confidence and streamline their business, taking them from chaos to coordinated. Her methods and experience prove that anyone can up-level their business & make more money without working around the clock. Rebecca believes in collaboration over competition and given the right tools, anyone can be successful.

In today’s episode, we discuss all the details behind the scenes of a designer’s work that you don’t see. Social media shows a false view of our industry. What goes on, in reality, is something that so many designers are craving for someone who can relate to them.

Rebecca shares about her recently launched course on pricing. In her journey of creating this course, she interviewed prominent designers in her city. Designers who look ‘wow,’ like they must be pulling in millions of dollars.

She got two big takeaways from these interviews – One, not a single design firm did it the same way. And secondly, some of the design firms she spoke to she was racking her brain on how they were profitable. She looked at their Instagram account and saw AD quality design projects, but the way they were pricing, she was wondering how they were supporting their team?

“I was thinking you are undercharging for your services,” Rebbeca said

This went to show that you don’t really know how people are doing things behind the scenes. But when you’re in a community like Rebecca’s or mine, you can start to talk to the designers and share, and there is so much power in that.

We don’t need to stay away from each other and be fearful of sharing about our businesses. We are not each other’s competition, and Rebecca and I are both proof of that. We both have courses for interior designers and here we are, sharing our platforms!

Pricing your projects

For the first five years of Rebecca’s business, she shares how she was in the red. She wasn’t making a profit.

She was in such a bubble she didn’t want to look at the numbers. “Even if you hate talking about money, numbers, math, when you run your own business, you can’t turn a blind eye to that,” says Rebecca.

So many designers are starting their own businesses, and they haven’t worked for anyone else like me and Rebecca have, so where do you get the information on how to do it?

It’s so much more than picking tile and picking the perfect fabric.

Part of the learning is something both Rebecca and I agree on, which is having mentors and a community along the way you can go to and have guidance.

We are always learning. I’ve been in this for 30 years, and there are still things that, as a seasoned designer, I learn that could move me further down the path.

“If you are open to learning, you will go farther than you can imagine.” Rebecca

We also talk about building confidence, AI, and more! I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did! You will no doubt learn something from today’s episode. It’s like listening to two seasoned designers chatting about the industry that we love!
