Add-on’s, renovations, and new construction homes can seem intimidating to take on. How do you even get started? How do you find and manage contractors? What surprises should you anticipate coming up? How long do these things take?
In this podcast, you will learn all that and so much more!

What you will learn from this episode:
How new forms of communication can lead to miscommunication
Why technology will never replace in-person face-to-face meetings
We have many forms of communicating with each other. However, technology cannot replace good old-fashioned face-to-face conversations.
It can be difficult to interpret the tone of an email or text message. If you are in a rush but need to send someone a quick note, the person receiving it could think you are angry or upset with them.
Zoom calls are great. We can meet with friends and teachers without leaving the house. We can chat with people from all around the world and feel like we are in the same room. But a downside of this is that you cannot see their true facial expressions. There is really no way to know if someone misunderstands something you said unless they say so.
I need to know when my client doesn’t get what I’m saying. Seeing their expression in person is a nuance that is lost on a screen. You lose that connection when you are not face-to-face with someone.
So, whether you are the homeowner, the client, or the designer, I want you to make it a priority to have in-person meetings with whoever you are working with as much as possible.
And yes, you may have clients who will not want to pay for multiple in-person meetings. What we do for a living has a cost attached to it. But you need to explain to them that it will cost MORE if mistakes are made because of miscommunication.
If you haven’t heard, the Only Girl On The Jobsite Designer Edition course is getting an update!
We are adding more topics and lessons based on feedback from our current students. The relaunch is happening on June 1st. You can find it under the Designers tab at the top of my webpage, www.devignierdesign.com.
Also, please join me for my FREE masterclass on Wednesday, May 25th, at noon Eastern time, on How To Provide Successful Renovation Services As A Designer – Setting yourself and your client up for success. During this webinar, I will show you how these both people skills and management skills directly apply to renovation management! And if you can’t make it live, register anyway, and we will send you the replay.
As always, you can reach me at renee@devignierdesign.com or DM me on Instagram @devignierdesign if you have any questions or topics you’d like me to cover in future episodes.
