Add-on’s, renovations, and new construction homes can seem intimidating to take on. How do you even get started? How do you find and manage contractors? What surprises should you anticipate coming up? How long do these things take?
In this podcast, you will learn all that and so much more!
What you will learn from this episode:
The problem with HGTV
Why it affects people like me
Can you expect the same results as what you see on these shows?
The positive ways these shows have impacted my industry
I came upon these shows way back when they first started, and I had been anxiously awaiting for something like them. I thought it would be nice if more people understood what home renovation projects looked like. It would be great if my friends and family understand a little bit more about what I do……and then they came out. And I realized they were just for entertainment.
I can only speak of my own 27 years of experience, but, they don’t fit my reality. I have never run a project with such fan-fare and everything buttoned up with a bow at the end. In their defense, you can’t include in a 30-minute program everything a project has going on. Things need to be cut out and edited in order to make that time and to make it interesting. I can assure you that there are SO many components to what I do that aren’t that interesting!
The more I watched it though, the more disappointed I became. Because not only are they trying to entertain people, they’re trying to educate people on the process, and it just isn’t reality.
They also don’t portray the amount of time certain tasks take or the pricing of projects.
However, I am grateful that these shows have shown some of what I do every day, and they have made home projects more accessible, and interesting. It does open up the conversations and gets people excited about doing their home renovation projects, which is what we all love!
