Are you feeling overwhelmed knowing you have a construction project going on, and the Holiday is approaching?

First of all – it’s normal! It does happen, and really no matter when your project is going on, overwhelm is a normal emotion to feel!

However, I want to share with you ways to handle the stress and overwhelm you are feeling as a homeowner as well as designers in order to be able to enjoy your Holiday more.

The first thing I want to share with you is – you need to elevate yourself from a client role to a team member role. 

If you are a client you are in a reactive situation. Things happen to you. You never know what is going to happen. 

If you are a team member you actually know in advance what the schedule looks like. You can influence that schedule. 

So if you are celebrating Christmas and you see on the schedule two weeks ago that there is a big installation happening the week of the 20th, and that’s when maybe your kids are out of school and you really wanted to decompress during that time, enjoy yourself, enjoy the holiday.s Well, if you knew that three weeks ago, you could influence that.

So it’s really important to be a team member ALL the way through your project, but in particular, it is invaluable this time of year when everything is a bit chaotic. 

For those of you who are maybe saying you don’t care what is going on with your project during the holiday, something I do want you to consider is every contractor works different hours. Some are working until mid-day on the 24th, some are off the 22nd – 29th. Everybody is doing something different so you need to know in advance. 

If you’re a homeowner and you haven’t been a team member up until now NOW is the time! 

Most people that reach out to me are feeling a lack of control, so I want to empower you to take what control you can, especially this time of year to level out some of the overwhelm that you’re feeling from all areas of your life.

Now for interior designers, I never offer Christmas deadlines anymore. 

I look weeks in advance to see where all of my projects are and I plan accordingly. These are things you can do as a designer to be successful throughout the project. These are also things you can do to be successful even if you’re on vacation, and it’s not during the holidays.

Remember, as an interior designer you need to be there to support your team when things start back up. Be there to remind them where you left off on the project. 

And, as a homeowner, know that when your project gets started up again, it might take a day for everyone to get back into the flow of things. 

Project overwhelm is normal. In both of my courses I go into what I call, the four emotional stages of a project. It doesn’t matter what time of year your project is, these are normal.
