For most people, saying no can be a real challenge.

In this episode, I want to tackle the topic of saying no. I’ve learned firsthand the value of saying no and how that can move a project, as well as the trajectory of my firm forward. 

I want each of you to be confident in not only evaluating when it’s appropriate but how to say it professionally. Whether you are saying no to a client’s request or a contractor’s suggestion, you should always trust your gut.

Just because a professional says it has to be done a certain way doesn’t always mean it’s the only way. Whether you are managing it as a designer or you are managing it as a homeowner, you still are in charge. This is the empowerment I want you to feel when you are in these situations.

If your project feels rushed it could be that the contractor needs to move on to another project. The way the world is right now, everything is delayed. Nothing is ending as it should and therefore causing other projects not to be starting as initially planned.

Another situation could be if your business is both renovation management and decorating. If you want to keep the percentages of those two even, don’t take on more of one if you are already working on too many of those types of jobs. That will most likely not move the needle of your business forward.

Saying no will keep you open to more of the projects you want to work on.

I understand the angst in pushing off work or saying no to work. But I want you to be laser-focused on what your goals are for your firm and act accordingly.

The art of saying no is not a negative.

It is a way of protecting your values and goals, which is critical for your projects, your team, and your business.
