Critical First Meeting to Ensure a Successful Renovation

In the last few episodes, I’ve covered topics like confidence and mindset when taking on a renovation project, the current supply chain issues, and staying focused during this uncertain time.

So in this episode, I am getting back to the nuts and bolts of managing a home renovation project. Whether you are a homeowner or an interior designer, there is one critical meeting that needs to be held before the construction starts.

And that is a contractor/subcontractor walk-through meeting.

The purpose of this meeting is to walk through the entire project from beginning to end. It’s essential to have everyone involved in the same room at the same time. This is an opportunity, as a team, to go through the entire scope of work, catch any issues that may arise, and deal with them before they actually happen.

I recommend not scheduling this meeting too far in advance and certainly not the day before. The best time is about a week or two before the start of construction.

You might get some pushback when it comes time to schedule this meeting. We all know everyone is busy, so use this time wisely and keep it short and sweet. If one person has a conflict, try to work around it. You can modify the time or promise they can have the first ten minutes of the meeting so they can be on their way when they’re finished.

I am also sharing a few other positive benefits of having these meetings. So again, I cannot express how important something like this is. It may sound trivial and therefore easy to skip. But be sure to inform your team that this meeting will benefit everyone involved in the project.

I firmly believe you cannot get too much information, in advance, on a construction project.
