Add-on’s, renovations, and new construction homes can seem intimidating to take on. How do you even get started? How do you find and manage contractors? What surprises should you anticipate coming up? How long do these things take?

In this podcast, you will learn all that and so much more!

Four Stages of Emotions to Expect on Every Renovation Project

What you will learn in this episode:

  • What emotions will be coming up throughout a project

  • How to manage whatever emotional stage you are in

  • How to avoid some emotions at all costs

You may be snickering when you hear that there will indeed be an emotional journey during any home renovation project.

I get that all the time when I explain this to my clients. But afterward, they always say, “Oh my gosh, Renee, you were right! I can’t believe the highs and lows I experienced and the stages we went through together.”

Everyone is so focused on the budgets, selections, timing, and team that they forget that there will be an emotional journey along the way and, if mismanaged, can seriously damage a smooth running project.

This all started with me explaining this to homeowners because I have watched my clients enough over the years to know that this emotional journey breaks out into four stages.

I want to also explain, especially to designers, that you don’t avoid this same emotional journey on your projects! The complicating factor is you will have multiple projects running at the same time at different stages.

It can be exhausting, I will be the first to tell you that. But I firmly believe knowledge is power, and knowing that these stages happen, whether you are the homeowner or the designer, can help you get through them, process the feelings that you are experiencing, utilize them the best that you can, and mitigate them in any possible way and then move through them to the next stage successfully.

In today’s episode, I go through each of the four emotional stages of excitement, fatigue, anger, and finally, relief and hopefully joy.

Even if you are midway through your project and stewing in fatigue, listen to this episode to find out how to manage that and get through that stage. Once you understand the stages you go through, they won’t be as problematic or dramatic because you know it is normal. If you don’t know what to expect, then you don’t know if you should be angry or are just extra tired. But knowing what stage you are in and that it is normal, you can successfully manage those stages.

I hope today’s episode helps you understand each of these stages, and you can appreciate and understand what emotions will be coming up throughout a project, how to foresee them in advance, how to manage them when they are there and how to avoid some at all costs!
