How to you set yourself up for having the most successful project possible knowing full well that you will be in the minority on any project
There is a better way for women to be on construction projects!
Women don’t need to feel insubordinate, less than, or bribe the guys to like them. I have seen it all and it is a more successful and enjoyable time when you know that you have the knowledge and the confidence to be successful on a job site, and you are one of the guys.
As the only girl on a construction site, what is it like to be a part of the team?
As a homeowner, you will have more than one role. You are the client, the paying customer, but you also want to share your knowledge and to be confident as a team member.
As an interior designer, you are often thrown onto a team that is already created, so you don’t have the option of choosing who you get to work with.
But in all of these roles you are typically the only girl in a male-dominated workplace.
I work with many men who accept me as a team member and don’t look at me as insubordinate, but there are those stereotypical men of which I have spoken about before and those are the projects I took away lessons on not only how to avoid those situations but practical tools on how to handle them when changing those roles are not under my control.
And that may be your case as well. You may not have the ability to change any of the contractors, but as a designer, you are expected to bring that project to a smooth conclusion.
That is what we want to talk about today.
How do you set yourself up for having the most successful project possible knowing full well that you will be in the minority on any project – whether that is a small renovation or an entire home built from the ground up.
If you are given the opportunity to build your team, this is where your best shot starts.
You want to do the research and see if they are comfortable working with a woman….or not!
You also want to let that person know during the interview process that you WILL be a team member and learn the steps that you need to learn for this project. I can promise you they will come into your interview thinking you will take on the role of client. And there IS a difference between client and team members.
My goal is for you to show up confidently and knowledgeable on your projects! Yes, there are rigid gender roles on these projects, and that I cannot change for you, but I hope that after listening you will feel that this is just a factor, not a concern.
A smooth-running project needs to be your only concern, not the people on the project – because you’ve hired them the right way.
You can find all sorts of information through my courses, workbooks, emails, and more.
