What you will learn in this episode:

  • Value can be based on time

  • Value is also perceived

  • How to gain the skills and knowledge to add this niche to your toolbox

We define value in so many different ways. In particular in this industry. There’s monetary’s value, yes. That is why I, and I’m sure you all, also work. But there are two other values that renovation management brings to my firm. In today’s episode, I’m NOT talking about financial gains because you’ve heard me say before how renovation management will supplement decorating work when those margins diminish yearly.

Firstly, value can be based on time.

Our industry sees time so different than a normal 9-5 job. Time is the one non-renewable resource that we have and what we use every day in our projects. We base our pricing on how much time a project will take. We look at how much time we lost on a project.

We brush off time like it’s nothing, but that is something I find unique about our business. In a typical 9-5 job, you can get a consistent paycheck whether you work 2 or 20 hours, whereas we don’t have that luxury. We base our income on the time we spend on it.

Value is also perceived.

A designer who can run a renovation project is seen as more professional than a decorator. I know that may upset some people. But the reality we all know, the majority of hte people think that our industry is something they can do themselves.

You can command higher fees if you become an expert in this niche.

It really is as simple as that.

You can think about this in other professions. You have a general practitioner, and then you have a surgeon. They’re both doctors, but one is a specialist, and one is a generalist.

Having this niche in your toolbox, on your website, marketing for this specific niche inside our industry automatically elevates you amongst your competitors.

You may do some renovation work now – but unless you are actively marketing for it, then you’re just dabbling. Projects are coming to you organically. But most people have to market themselves for this type of work. And if the projects coming to you are the same scope and scale, then you need to be marketing yourself to scale.

This may mean gaining experience in various ways, which I describe in today’s episode. There are many designers or contractors or others out there that can elevate your experience and educate you along the way.

You will make mistakes along the way. So you need to mitigate those as much as humanely possible, and that goes back to learning from others.

Then there is my course, Renovation Management for Interior Designers. It is built solely for renovation management. It takes you through the marketing, setting up clients, finding contractors, and preparing your client for the journey you will be taking together, as well as me as your mentor along the way.

And then, of course, there is always this podcast you can listen to for tips and ideas to integrate into your projects and your businesses as you build these skills.

It needs to be all-encompassing if you’re going to elevate your confidence to where it needs to be to present yourself as an expert in renovation management, set yourself apart from your competition, and add a lucrative income stream.
