Add-on’s, renovations, and new construction homes can seem intimidating to take on. How do you even get started? How do you find and manage contractors? What surprises should you anticipate coming up? How long do these things take?

In this podcast, you will learn all that and so much more!

FEATURED ON THE SHOW:

INTERIOR DESIGNER’S GUIDE TO CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THE EPISODE:

KNOW WHAT PROJECTS WILL FIT YOU AND YOUR FIRM RIGHT NOW

HOW TO SAY A PROFESSIONAL, “NO, THANK YOU.”

WHY THIS WILL HELP YOU GET THE RESULTS YOU TRULY WANT IN YOUR BUSINESS

Today I wanted to share two potential jobs I turned down and why I did so.

I always practice what I preach, including knowing what projects to take on and if they will be a good fit for you and your firm when they reach out.

I want you to learn from my mistakes so that you can stay laser-focused on the projects that you want to take on.

So what are those projects?

That will be specific to you, your time in your career, and what you want to work on.

I am taking on fewer projects with larger scopes at this time in my career. Because frankly, I have other things going on that are just as important to me as my client design work.  Those include things like this podcast! I want to leave time available each week in order to make it as impactful as possible. I’m also really leaning toward mentoring other designers through my online content and course, Interior Designer’s Guide to Construction Management.

Having these other priorities made me really go back and evaluate – what does that mean for my client work?

I don’t want to give up my design work because it really does fill me with joy. And so, I made the active determination that that means I have to pair down and take on fewer projects with larger scopes of work, which means they run longer. And therefore, I have to be even more careful about which projects I take on.

Right now, it’s the middle of the summer, and my phone and emails have been quiet, so it is more tempting to take on any project that comes your way because you have that panic in the pit of your stomach, thinking you’ll never get a job again! I have been there, I have done that, and it has not paid off for me.

And so I want to explain what I just went through with two different outreaches and why they aren’t a good fit, but more importantly, why I feel good about saying “No thank you” to these projects.

Remember, you are in control of your own business. You have the ability to say, “No, thank you.” At any time to any client.

I hope this episode inspires you to take a hard look at the projects you have, the projects you want, and the projects you’re being offered.
