Today I am joined by a contractor from L.A. who has a mission similar to my own. His goal is to give homeowners the tools they need to avoid scams and have a clear understanding on how to find, vet, hire, and manage contractors.

My guest today, Matt DiBara, comes from a long line of construction. His family has a total of 102 years of contracting experience. Matt grew up going to job sites with his dad, was taught to love what he does, and build relationships with clients.

With all of his experience he had people reach out to him asking him questions about what to do, and it grew into his new project, the Undercover Contractor, where you will be able to get his new, FREE E-book, The Undercover Contractor, How To Not Get F**ked by Contractors, and his new Podcast coming out in March, The Undercover Contractor Podcast.

Matt wants to help bridge the gap between homeowners and contractors. There are good homeowners and there are good contractors, but there has been a space created where people expect something different than what they might receive. Thanks to all the shows out there, homeowners wonder why their project takes longer than 2 weeks, isn’t glamorous, and sexy, why there isn’t a dramatic reveal, it’s messy, etc. So, if they aren’t getting all of this, then they feel taken advantage of.

There are so many factors to consider before hiring a contractor. A lot of it comes down to homeowners’ taking the time to research, and make sure they find the right contractor for their particular project. And you need to do more than just read one review and write that contractor off, or get a referral, and go with that contractor. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes on, personalities that mesh well and some that clash. It’s so important to take the time and find out how people work, what they’re like. It comes down to building a relationship with that person, who will essentially be in your home for months to even years depending on the size of your project.

Keep communication open, trust your gut, and treat each other with kindness and human respect. A little kindness really goes a long way. And like I’ve talked about in previous episodes, keeping everything organized and in a binder makes it a lot harder for you to be taken advantage of when you have everything right there in front of you, and you know what’s going on.

Bad experiences impact people for years, it causes an emotional impact when you are taken advantage of when something isn’t done ethically or professionally, and it really does kills us to hear about things like that. Which is why it’s Matt’s goal to make your experience as enjoyable as possible.
