HGTV Reality VS Hollywood
How cockiness is different than confidence on a jobsite
The benefits of research and preparation before starting your home project
I want to talk about an important topic today. So many people start a project, have had friends who did projects, watched the shows, have some knowledge on what to expect. But low and behold things come up where you are being told things, important things, and you do the smile and nod approach. The contractor is using terms where you’re not quite sure what they mean, and you could be agreeing to something that in the end that you don’t know about. And that’s where the trouble comes in.
So how do you avoid these situations? I’ve said this before, but I can’t say it enough.
I’m sharing with you an example in today’s episode of getting yourself in a bad situation where it could potentially be very expensive to fix. And where research and preparation can help you prepare and make better decisions.
And while knowledge and confidence is important, it’s also very important to not come across as cocky.
From decades of experience, I know that cockiness does not work on job sites. It shuts contractors down, emotionally, mentally – it’s the worst. Keep yourself away from that at all costs. It’s ok to ask questions. It’s ok to not know what all the terms mean. When a client reaches cockiness the only reaction I’ve seen to that is defensiveness. Jobs don’t stop, they keep going, but it’s not a good situation. But they might not let you know about certain things because of the potential cockiness they could have to deal with from you.
If something comes up and you don’t know, ask for time to research. Ask for 24 hours for you to look into and make the right, informed decision. These are the critical pieces that you can benefit from. There are times I am still learning on job site….even after 27 years.
