What you will learn from this episode:

  • How I came to focus on construction within my industry

  • Discovering the gifts from my family

  • Designer vs. Decorator

In today’s episode,  I thought I’d explain how I came to focus on construction within my industry. When people ask what I do, I say, of course, an interior designer. I usually get such a positive response, and they ask what I think about shows like HGTV – which you all know what I think of that. Another reaction I get, if they dive in a little bit more, is they’ll ask if I do commercial work or residential work. I’ve been doing this long enough, that I’ve done about everything. I then explain that most of my time is in construction. And, when they hear interior designer people normally think of furniture, and paint, fabrics, and interaction with the homeowner, things like that. And that is all true. But I’m here to explain there’s a large number of us in this industry, that do home renovation construction, and also commercial construction. I don’t know why it falls through the cracks, but it always seems to. It wasn’t until I left New York City that I realized I was a unicorn in my industry in a smaller town.

I want to share with you why I am where I am today. Why I chose construction, and how I discovered my natural abilities for building, awareness of volume, and being able to see projects in 3D. I’ve discovered that it is really in my DNA. I believe it’s a natural ability and used to always credit my Grandfather for these abilities. But recently, after my father suddenly passed away, I’ve been discovering he had the ability as well. I never knew that about my father, and it’s been like peeling back the layers of an onion, discovering who he was not just as my dad, but as a boy, a teenager, a man.

So, while I knew some of the broad strokes of my ability, I didn’t fully understand how embedded in my DNA my love for this industry really was. So in today’s episode, I’m giving you a glimpse of my past, and sharing about my family, and their past experience and abilities with construction, and architecture.

I hope that you will gain the knowledge that I have learned through excellent education and decades of experience, being on the jobsite day in and day out. Because for me, that would be fulfilling my ultimate goal.
