Add-on’s, renovations, and new construction homes can seem intimidating to take on. How do you even get started? How do you find and manage contractors? What surprises should you anticipate coming up? How long do these things take?

In this podcast, you will learn all that and so much more!

What you will learn in this episode:

  • What the hero complex is

  • What designers CAN be a hero in and what they CAN’T

  • How to have the confidence to say “No.”

Today I want to talk about the hero complex.

I have suffered from the hero complex and have paid a price for it. This, again, is what drives me to share these topics, stories, and strategies so that you don’t have to go through the same lessons I had to go through!! So, what is the hero complex? The technical definition is:

Striving to be the hero of a situation.

That sounds like it’s a good thing, right?

How does this apply to designers, though?

Designers, by nature, are people pleasers. They want people to be happy. They want to provide a service that brings happiness and joy to their clients. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

The problem comes in when it tips into wanting to be the hero.

The hero complex comes in when there are red flags that we’re seeing and being told and yet ignoring. In today’s episode, I also want to help you boost your confidence to no longer ignore those red flags.

So, I know it’s not fun to talk about red flags or jobs you should walk away from, but it is a reality in our business.

After listening, I hope you understand how designers can be a hero in everything from furnishings, renovation management, design, esthetics, and bringing dreams to life. However, here’s what a designer CANNOT be a hero for – solving problems that have nothing to do with the design, decoration, or construction of a home.

I hope this episode helps you to have the confidence to say “No.” I want you to have the confidence to say “No,” even if it’s the only discovery call you’ve had this month. I want you to say “No”  even if you want to say yes.
